One third of candidates have criminal background
44 out of 112 male candidates in Wardha municipal council polls are in trouble with the justice for criminal acts. They would be 5 of these 44 people from Congress, 10 from NCP (National Productivity Council), 6 from BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party), 4 from Shiv Sena, 13 independent candidates, 3 from RPI (Republican Party of India) and 2 from Bharatiya Republican Party.
Two candidates from NCP were arrested recently by the police for consuming liquor in a hotel (alcohol is prohibited in some states of Inida): Narendra Jagdale, and a big shot of the party, Suresh Deshmukh. Shiv Sena district president Ravi Balpande said an arrestation doesn't prove that he's guilty, and that Mr. Deshmukh can stand for elections as long as he's not proven guilty.
Basant Pande, a campaigner of Nayantra Organization, declared that people will choose clean candidates, even if they are independent, and that will be a shock for the parties who invite criminals to increase their numbers.
According to RPI leader Ashoka Meshram, reserving half the seats to women has brought about major changes, as women tend to be more socially responsible than men.
In fact, there's only one BJP woman facing charges and her "crimes" are minor compared to the men's.

44 candidats aux électionx municipales du district de Wardha dans l’état du Maharashtra ont été mis en examen en raison d'actes criminels, sur un total de 112.
Sur ces 44 personnes, 5 appartiendraient au Congrès, 10 au NCP (National Productivity Council), 6 au BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party), 4 au Shiv Sena, 3 au RPI (Republican Party of India), 2 au Bharatiya Republican Party, et 13 sont indépendants.

Ravi Balpande a déclaré qu'une seule arrestation ne prouve pas qu'il soit coupable, et qu'il a tout à fait la possibilité de se présenter aux élections tant que ce ne sera pas prouvé.
Selon Basant Pande, militant anti corruption, les gens choisiront des candidats sans antécédents judiciaires, et que cela prouvera aux partis que de proposer des criminels pour augmenter leur nombre (et donc leurs chances de l'emporter) était inutile.
Selon Ashoka Meshram, le président du RPI, le fait que la moitié des sièges soient réservés aux femmes a changé beaucoup de choses, les femmes étant moins mêlées à des affaires criminelles que les hommes.
En fait, une seule candidate du BJP a été mise en examen et pour des charges beaucoup moins lourdes que ses pairs masculins.
