Eight-wives-man in jail
Sukumar, alias Anchan Rajesh, 35, was arrested in Somwarpet in Kodagu district, Karnataka on Saturday night for polygamy.
The man had indeed married eight women over the past eight years, in four different states (Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Kasargod and Madikeri).
Each time he had got a dowry from 10,000 rupees to 40,000 rupees (the salary of the average Indian is around 100 Rs a day, so about 35,000 Rs per year). According to the Police, he split every 15 months, claiming a misunderstanding with his wife or her relatives.
The deceit came to light when Schuba from Vittla published the photo of her missing husband in the local newspaper in May 17, 2012, a photo which Revathi from Padu Thonse, Udupi, came across. Then she filed a complaint on June 8 for adultery and fraud. He had been reported missing after stealing jewelry and 20,000 Rs from her and her mother, while pretending to have found a job in the Middle East.
His first victim was Deralakatte from Meenakshi. He then married Shambavi from Kasargod, as he was working in a hotel as a cook. After leaving her upon an argument over a drinking binge, he married Jayanthi from Uppinangady and Prema from Kaup, Rajani from Dharmasthala and Revathi. There he had wedding with Sunanda and left her some months later when he pawned jewerly to the bank.
Finally, he got married to Subha in Mangalore.
However, these scams have given birth to ten children, and one more to come from his last wife.
Opinion : Officially, the system of dowry is abolished in India today, but you can clearly see it’s not yet the case in practice. India still has a long way to go to change the status of women so that they wouldn’t be just considered as commodities.
L’homme aux huit épouses en prison
Sukumar, alias Anchan Rajesh, 35 ans, a été arrêté à Somwarpet dans le district de Kodagu, Karnataka et a été emprisonné dans la prison d’Udupi samedi soir pour polygamie.
L’homme avait en effet épousé huit femmes ces huit dernières années, dans quatre Etats différents (le Dakshina Kannada, l’Udupi, le Kasargod et le Madikeri), recevant à chaque mariage une dot allant de 10.000 roupies à 40.000 roupies (le salaire de l’Indien moyen étant aux alentours de 100 roupies par jour, soit environ 35.000 roupies par an). Selon la police, il rompait les alliances tous les 15 mois environ, prétendant une mésentente avec sa femme ou ses proches.
La tromperie a été mise au jour lorsque Schuba de Vittla a publié la photo de son mari disparu dans le journal local le 17 mai 2012, photo sur laquelle est tombée Revathi, de Padu Thonse, Udupi. Celle-ci a donc porté plainte le 8 juin dernier pour adultère et escroquerie. Il avait en effet été porté disparu après avoir volé des bijoux et 20.000 roupies à elle et à sa mère en prétendant avoir trouvé un travail au Moyen Orient.
Sa première victime a été Meenakshi de Deralakatte. Il s’est ensuite marié à Shambavi, de Kasargod, où il travaillait dans un hôtel en tant que cuisinier. Après l’avoir quittée suite à dispute au sujet d’une beuverie, il a épousé Jayanthi de Uppinangady, puis Prema de Kaup, Rajani de Dharmasthala et Revathi. Il s’est ensuite lié à Sunanda pour quitter peu après la maison lorsqu’il a mis en gage des bijoux à la banque.
Enfin, il s’est marié à Subha à Mangalore.
Ces arnaques auront cependant donné naissance à dix enfants, plus un à venir de Subha de Vittla.
Opinion : Officiellement la dot est abolie en Inde aujourd’hui, pourtant on peut clairement voir que ce n’est pas encore le cas dans la pratique. Il reste donc un long chemin à faire pour l’Inde pour changer le statut de la femme afin qu’elle ne soit plus seulement considérée comme une marchandise ou un moyen de s’enrichir.
