Last week, twelve women from Surat, a city of Gujarat, complained about having been forced into genealogical tests at the Surat Municipal Institute of Medical Education and Research. Physical tests are required from anybody who wants to work after a three-year probation period. Indeed, the women were trainee government clerks. By group of ten they were naked in a room, waiting to be checked by female doctors.
Their union was not opposed to the tests and deplore now the methods of the hospital. Union leader Ahmed Shaikh said to the Indian Times:"If they had any doubt about an employee's health, they should have to undergo tests in an acceptable manner." In other hospitals of Gujarat practising physical test, there was no one claim. And twenty years earlier tests did not involve gynaecological checks.
After other claims were lodged, and the speaking got free a bit, some students said they had been forced to take off their underwear to prove they didn’t have their periods. Indian authorities are expected to deliver a report within 15 days. And the municipality has formed a committee too.
Mayor Jagdish Patel said he took the matter very seriously: "We will take strict action against the culprits if the allegations levelled by the women staffers are found to be true."
Un examen médical douteux
La semaine dernière, douze femmes de Surat, une ville de Gujarat, se sont plaintes d'avoir subi des tests gynécologiques au Surat Municipal Institute of Medical Education and Research.
Des tests physiques sont requis pour tous ceux qui sont embauchés après leur formation de 3 ans. Les femmes étaient des stagiaires employées du gouvernement. Par groupe de dix elles ont dû attendre nues dans une pièce avant d’être examinées par du personnel médical féminin.
Leur syndicat n’était pas opposé aux tests d'aptitude physique mais déplore les méthodes de l’hôpital. Le représentant syndical Ahmed Shaikh a déclaré au Times of India : « S'il y avait un doute sur la santé des employées, elles auraient dû passer un examen médical dans des conditions convenables.” Dans d'autres hôpitaux de la même région, aucune plainte n'avait été émise contre ces tests physiques.
Après d'autres plaintes se sont ajoutées à la liste et la parole semble s’être libérée. Ainsi des adolescentes confièrent avoir été obligées d’enlever leurs sous-vêtements pour prouver qu'elles n'avaient pas leurs règles.
Les autorités indiennes doivent soumettre leur rapport dans les deux semaines et la municipalité a formé une commission d’enquête. Le maire Jagdish Patel a dit prendre l'affaire très au sérieux et a ajouté : « Nous prendrons des mesures strictes contre les coupables si les déclarations de ces femmes sont bien fondées. »
