Eight new cities to be built The Indian Ministry of Housing and Urbanism announces the creation of 8 new towns to meet the needs for urbanization. India has not built new cities for a long time but the project became possible following the decision of the finance commission to grant 80 billion rupees (912 million euros) for the development of 8 new cities. Each city is located in a different state and will receive 10 billion rupees (114 million euros). The government will soon provide a detailed framework for the project as well as an implementation plan which will be released in 6 months or even a year. According to the Minister of Housing, a censused city is an urban area with more than 5,000 inhabitants, more than 400 inhabitants per square kilometer and in which 75% of men do not work in agriculture. This new-born project is unclear as it remains in the draft stage. L’Inde n’avait plus construit de villes nouvelles depuis longtemps. Ce projet est devenu possible suite à la décision de la commission des finances d’accorder 80 milliards de roupies pour le développement de 8 villes. Chaque ville sera située dans un état différent et recevra une dotation de 10 milliards de roupies. Le gouvernement fournira prochainement un cadre détaillé du projet ainsi qu’un plan d’exécution qui sortira dans six mois, voire un an. Le ministre du logement les définit comme des « zones urbaines comptant plus de 5000 habitants, plus de 400 habitants au kilomètre carré et dans laquelle 75% des hommes ne travaillent pas dans l’agriculture.
