Violence against women is very common in India. With a total of 33,658 cases of rape violence in 2017 reported, that would make an average of 92 rapes per day. But this number is not significative because most of this violence isn’t report…
Furthermore, Indian courts take a long time to deal with these cases. At the end of 2017, 127,800 cases were still pending while 18,300 new cases were reported the same year. Most cases do not result in legal proceedings.
In an extremely violent rape case; a woman was recently burnt alive while on her way to the court hearing. She died in hospital with 95% burns. The Indian police is also violent sometimes and has committed some extrajudicial killings. Four men accused of rape have been shot dead by the police because they “tried to escape”.
The forms of extrajudicial police killings of rape suspects are more and more frequent. The latest killings took place in the state of Telangana, where there have been seven other killings over the past decade. Many people cheer these killings considered an act of vengeance, but this is not what real justice is about.
