What’s in a name?

In India, many villages with strange names want to change them.
Indeed, some names are perceived as racist, bizarre or altogether embarrassing for the villagers.
Some of them succeeded. For example, Ganda, an Indian village, whose name means dirty or ugly in Hindi, became Ajit Nagar.
But the process is long and difficult because of the two governments: the state one and the federal one. These two states have to check whether the new name of the village doesn’t already exist anywhere else in India.
That is the reason why many villages eager to change their names, have been waiting for years. For instance, the village of Lula Ahir have already received a rejection letter from government and decided to try again with a new name.

En Inde, plusieurs villages aux noms étranges veulent en changer.
En effet, certains d’entre eux sont perçus comme raciste, bizarres ou embarrassants pour les habitants.
Certains villages ont réussi à changer de nom. Par exemple, Ganda un village indien dont le nom signifie sale ou laid en hindi est devenu Ajit Nagar.
Mais le processus pour changer de nom est long et difficile parce qu’en Inde il y a deux types de gouvernements : l’état local et l’état fédéral. Ces deux états doivent vérifier si le nom du village n’existe pas déjà quelque part en Inde.
C’est la raison pour laquelle plusieurs villages, qui aimeraient changer leurs noms, attendent depuis plusieurs années. Pour l’instant, le village de Lula Ahir a déjà reçu une lettre de rejet du gouvernement et a décidé de retenter sa chance avec un nouveau nom.
