Anthrax kills elephants in Assam Assam’s state Forest officials are questioned about the health security measures to be taken against a possible anthrax epidemic which affects the elephants in the Forest of Joypur, district of Dibrugarh. In fact, the carcasses of two female elephants aged 10 and 20 years, were found in the forest reserve at Soraipung. They belonged to the same herd. The health authorities autopsied the first elephant which was tested positive to anthrax, an infectious disease caused by a very virulent bacteria Bacilhus Anthracis. The result for the second elephant is still awaited. This is the first time that anthrax has been detected in dead elephants in the region, although the disease has previously affected living elephants. L’Anthrax tue des éléphants en Assam Une enquête est en cours auprès des autorités forestières de l’état d’Assam concernant les mesures de sécurité sanitaires à prendre contre une éventuelle épidémie d’anthrax qui touche les éléphants dans la localité de Joypur, district de Dibrugarh. En effet, on a trouvé les cadavres de deux éléphants femelles âgées de 10 et 20 ans appartenant au même troupeau dans la réserve forestière à Soraipung. Les autorités sanitaires ont autopsié la première et révélé qu’elle était porteuse de l’anthrax, une maladie causée par une bactérie très virulente (bacille du charbon). On attend le résultat du deuxième animal. C’est la première fois qu’on détecte l’anthrax sur des éléphants morts de la région, même si cette maladie a touché auparavant des éléphants vivants.
