This story could be a fairy tail of
the modern ages. Twenty-five years after he lost in Calcutta's biggest train
station, Saroo Munshi Khan found the house where he grew up by looking for it
on Google Earth.
When he was 5, Saroo went to search
for some change in a train with his big brother. Exhausted, the kid fell asleep
while his brother disappears and when he woke up, he was alone in Calcutta's
principal train station where no one spoke his language, the Hindi.
As he couldn't read or write and he
didn't know his village's name, for the next week or so, Saroo traveled in and
out of Calcutta by train, randomly, hoping to end up back at his hometown, in
vain.
After beeing living on the streets for
a few weeks, an Hindi-spoker took pity of him and gave him a shelter for three
days before taking him to a local prison where he thought the child would be
safer. Sarro was then transferred to a juvenile home and then to The Indian
Society for sponsorship and Adoption (ISSA) and finally in an orphanage where
one day an Australian couple adopted him.
With his new family he went to school
and lived a comfortable life in Tasmania. In 2009 after being graduated, he had the crazy
idea of looking for the place he grew up and his biological family with Google
Earth. As his girlfriend had a fast internet connection, every late night,
Saroo searched for his past. Finally he saw something he recognized, a bridge
next to a train station, Burhanpur, the first train station where he lost his
brother when he was 5. From here, he reminded other details, a river, the
woods, and finally he arrived to a village called Khandwa.
He found the Town's Facebook group
where he asked questions to inhabitants and ended recognizing this town as the
town he lived until his 5 years. "Thankyou!" he wrote "Thats
it!! whats the quickest way to get to Khandwa if i was flying to India?"
And so on he jumped in a plane an
landed in India where he went in front of the little house of his childhood and
found his mother and siblings.
What a happy end to this story which
started so bad.

Cette histoire pourrait être un conte de fée des temps
modernes. Vingt-cinq ans après s’être perdu dans la plus grande gare de
Calcutta, Saroo Munshi Khan a trouvé la maison dans laquelle il a grandi en la
cherchant sur Google Earth.
Quand il avait 5 ans, Saroo est parti mendier dans un train
avec son grand frère. Epuisé, l’enfant s’endort et son frère disparaît, quand
il se reveilla il était tout seul à la gare principale de Calcutta où personne
ne parlait sa langue, l’Hindi.
Comme il ne savait ni lire ni écrire et qu’il ne connaissait pas le nom de son village, pendant une semaine environ, Saroo prit des trains au
hasard en espérant arriver dans sa ville natale, en vain.
Après avoir vécu quelques semaines dans la rue, un homme
parlant un peu l’Hindi eu pitié de lui et le recueillit pendant trois jours
avant de le confier à une prison qui le renvoya vers une prison pour enfant
puis au service des enfants disparus et finalement dans un orphelinat où un couple d’australiens
l’adopta.
Avec sa nouvelle famille il alla à l’école et vécu une vie
confortable en Tasmanie. En 2009 après avoir été diplômé, il eu la folle idée de
rechercher le lieu de son enfance et sa famille biologique en utilisant Google
Earth. Sa petite amie ayant l’internet à haut débit, tard toutes les nuits, Saroo
recherchait son passé. Il finit par reconnaître un lieu, un pont près d’une
zone industrielle et d’une gare, la gare de Burhanpur, là où il a perdu son
frère. A partir de là, il se rappela d’autres détails tels qu’une rivière, une
forêt et finalement il arriva dans un village nommé Khandwa.
Il trouva le groupe facebook de la ville et posa des
questions aux habitants et il finit par comprendre que c’était là qu’il vivait
jusqu’à ses 5 ans. « Merci » écrit-il « C’est ça !! Quel
est le moyen le plus rapide pour venir a Khandwa si je prends l’avion pour l’Inde ? »
Et donc il sauta dans un avion et atterrit en Inde où il
alla sur le pas de la porte de la petite maison de son enfance et retrouva sa
mère et ses frères et sœurs.
Quelle fin joyeuse pour une histoire qui avait si mal
commencé
